ILOILO CITY, Mar. 26 (PNA)- Department of Education Iloilo City Schools Division Assistant Superintendent Ma. Luz de los Reyes has laid the blame on too many extracurricular activities participated in by students and which for the most part have no bearing in academic-related exercises like the National Achievement Test(NAT).
According to Delos Reyes, schools have squandered precious hours of learning by engaging in activities which more often are performed outside of the classrrom and as a consequence, the ability of students to absorb more knowledge suffers.
In the recent NAT results, Iloilo City schools bottomed out in last place in Western Visayas, sending shockwaves of disbelief among citizens here who could not believe that remote schools in rural areas fared better.
Ratings for both elementary and secondary levels scored only 53% and 49%, respectively.
In past years,city-based schools here had scored poorly, but this year was most embarrassing as they ended at the lowest rung of the ladder.(PNA)
