ILOILO CITY, June 30 (PNA) — Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog here is planning to put up a monument at the Jaro Plaza with names of fallen Ilonggo soldiers who died in defense of the motherland and local heroes long forgotten by history.

“We are going to preserve their memories with their names written in the monument so that the Ilonggos will know and honor them for what they did to the country,” Mabilog said.

First name to be carved in the monument will be that of Marines 1st Lt. Roger Flores, a native of Barangay Bonifacio Tanza in the city proper, who died last week in an encounter with the Abu Sayaff terrorists in Patikul, Sulu.

Mabilog said there are numerous Ilonggo heroes and soldiers who died for the country but were not given due recognition.

The city chief executive said that with the monument, Ilonggos and visitors will know the local heroes, their history and accomplishments. (PNA)
