ILOILO CITY, April 24 (PNA) –- Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. has reiterated his support to the proposed development of Sicogon island in Carles, Iloilo believing it would further make northern Iloilo province an attractive tourist destination.

Defensor, in an interview Wednesday, said that he is inclined to provide whatever would be required to push the plan of the Sicogon Development Corporation (SIDECO).

He said that whatever issues that arise between SIDECO and some residents squatting on the property to be developed is a matter to be addressed by SIDECO and those people themselves, provided that the law must be followed and their rights upheld.

The residents oppose the proposed relocation by SIDECO to them in the nearby town of Estancia.

The governor also said that the Iloilo provincial board has already given an endorsement for the project in 2010 yet but if there is a need for the august body to have it re-endorsed then it would do so.

Meanwhile, Iloilo Business Club executive director Leah Lara has expressed previously great loss of opportunity if the development project will not push through. She expressed confidence that SIDECO and its partner developer will also ensure that families displaced by the project will be properly provided with their relocation and even alternative livelihood.

SIDECO’s plan is to develop its property in Sicogon island as a high-end resort with hotel accommodations and other needed facilities.(PNA)
